Roof Cleaning FAQs

It's Time to Smarten Up

What harm can moss and algae do to my roof?

Moss and algae are not harmful in themselves - but they allow moisture to be retained within the growth which can then seep into the roof tiles. Over a period of time this can cause cracks and small damage which may allow moisture penetration.

What's the worst that can happen?

It is a known fact that moisture ingress into the roofing structure can lead to firstly minor leakage and possibly damp and mould issues. If left untreated this moisture can seriously damage the entire roofing structure of trusses etc.

Does this happen to all roofs?

Moss and algae will always try to take hold of any roof surface, but of course it is especially prevalent in north facing roof structures, out of the direct sunlight most of the year. It will also be more common in cold and damp conditions, so the UK is quite often an ideal breeding ground for these issues.

Can I remove moss and algae myself?

Yes of course this is possible - but will come with mixed success and some dangers. The obvious danger would be clambering up onto your roof and working at height with little health and safety considerations - please do not attempt to do this. The other danger is potentially causing damage to the tiles in attempting to remove or scrape off the moss/algae.

This sounds like an expensive job - is that the case?

Not necessarily. Smarter Home Systems are a professional and experienced company dealing with roof cleaning and coating - we can achieve much more in a shorter time due to our knowledge and skill. Prices start from £995+vat. For the transformation achieved almost every time we work this is a very good ticket for such a great home improvement.

Will you come and see my property before quoting?

Absolutely - part of our process is completing a full site survey before quoting. We do not add any hidden extras after the work is done so a site survey is a necessity for both parties.

How long does the work take?

Clearly this will depend on the square meterage of the roof in question, but most projects can be completed in a maximum of 2 days unless the roof is exceptionally large or adverse weather hampers our progress.

Will the moss and algae return?

Yes it will as the house remains in the same climatic location that allowed the moss and algae to grow previously - although the regrowth will be slower if the tiles are thoroughly cleaned and back to a bare surface.

Can the regrowth be prevented?

We recommend a thorough coating of ProPERLA sealant after cleaning. This is the industry leading weatherproof sealant and is guaranteed for 10 years, but in reality lasts much longer. Most of our projects include firstly cleaning followed by coating.

What areas do Smarter Home Systems cover?

We are based in the Bournemouth area and complete a lot of work throughout Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Wimborne and Ringwood. We do though travel further afield and are often found working in Southampton, Portsmouth or Salisbury which are all within around an hours drive from our base.

How do I know you will do a good job?

Smarter Home are a family run business with customer care as a main aim. Every job is treated like our own. Our many glowing testimonials on Checkatrade and Rated People are testiment to how we go about our work.
